Chapter 4: Describing People, Things, and Places
A. Learning Objectives By the end of this chapter, students will be able to:
• Describe people, things, and places using a variety of adjectives and descriptive phrases.• Identify and use correct word order in descriptive sentences.
• Distinguish between physical and personality descriptions.
• Understand and use the structures "there is" and "there are" in context.
• Write and present a descriptive paragraph or project about someone or someplace familiar.
B. Warm-up Activity Activity: Who Am I? The teacher describes a famous person or classmate without saying their name. Students guess who it is. Example:
• "This person is tall, wears glasses, and is always smiling. She teaches English." Variation: Students bring a photo (not revealed to others) and give descriptions for classmates to guess.
C. Vocabulary Builder Adjectives to Describe People (Appearance & Personality):
• Appearance: tall, short, slim, chubby, long hair, curly hair, fair skin, dark-skinned, good-looking, attractive
• Personality: friendly, shy, kind, funny, honest, hardworking, lazy, talkative, generous
Adjectives to Describe Places: clean, dirty, quiet, noisy, spacious, cozy, crowded, modern, traditional, peaceful
Adjectives to Describe Things: big, small, heavy, light, expensive, cheap, colorful, useful, broken, old, new
Descriptive Phrases Examples:
• "She has long, straight hair."
• "The room is very clean and bright."
• "It is an old but beautiful building."
• "There are many trees around the park."
D. Listening and Speaking Practice Listening Task: Students listen to a recorded dialogue or short paragraph describing a person and a place. Example audio:
• "My name is Dito. I live near the school. My house is small but comfortable. My best friend is Anya. She is tall and has short hair. She is very smart and polite."
Comprehension Questions:
• What is Dito’s house like?
• What does Anya look like?
• How is Anya’s personality?
Speaking Practice:
• Pair work: Students describe each other using 3–5 adjectives.
• Group task: Describe a place in your school (e.g., library, canteen, computer lab).
E. Reading: Descriptive Text Text Example: "My Favorite Place – The School Library" Our school library is my favorite place. It is located near the main hall. The library is big, quiet, and very clean. There are many books and magazines. The chairs are comfortable, and the room has air conditioning. I like reading books there in my free time. Sometimes I also study with my friends. The librarian is very friendly.
Comprehension Questions:
• What place is being described?
• Where is the library located?
• What are some features of the library?
• What does the writer like doing there?
• How is the librarian described?
F. Grammar Focus: Adjectives and There is / There are Adjective Placement:
• Before the noun: "a small house," "an interesting book"
• After the verb "to be": "The house is small."
Common Patterns:
• There is + singular countable noun / uncountable noun:
• "There is a computer in the room."
• "There is some water on the table."
• There are + plural countable noun:
• "There are three students in the class."
Practice Sentences:
• "There is a large whiteboard in the classroom."
• "There are many colorful posters on the wall."
• "The canteen is always crowded during lunch."
G. Writing Practice: Describe a Person or Place Task Options (choose one):
• Describe your best friend:
• Use at least 5 different adjectives (appearance and personality)
• Include how long you have known them
• Describe your bedroom or classroom:
• Mention objects, size, atmosphere, and your feelings about it
• Describe a favorite place in your town:
• Explain where it is, what it looks like, and why you like it
Example Paragraph: My best friend’s name is Budi. He is tall and has short black hair. He is always friendly and helps me with homework. He likes playing football and is very energetic. I have known him since we were in junior high school.
H. Roleplay/Project: Create a Poster or Brochure Students choose one project:
• Poster Presentation: Choose a classmate, describe them using both appearance and personality traits, and include a drawing or photo.
• Mini Brochure: Describe a place (e.g., library, school canteen, your neighborhood). Use descriptive language and include pictures or drawings.
Students present their work orally to the class in 1–2 minutes.
